General enhancements

Day-to-day enhancements to a website can be made that are not costly and don't require major decision-making or shifts in your internet strategy.

Ideas for enhancements may emerge from regular website reviews or while updating content in the site. Unlike updating, however, you have more flexibility in deciding if and when you make enhancements because, by definition, they are embellishments rather than a necessity.

When maintaining your website always consider what small enhancements can be made, such as:

  • adding further text to what is already there (not just updating) – e.g. providing a better explanation of how to download a document, expanding on image captions, adding to the number of frequently asked questions
  • adding new images, video, audio – e.g. adding images to the e-postcard facility or providing a video demonstration
  • providing new content by hotlinking to free syndicated content – e.g. news, time and weather feeds. See more on RSS
  • adding new links – e.g. adding links to other sites and providing expanded explanations about the hotlinks
  • promoting more aggressively – e.g. registering the site with search engines that you have never registered with before, increasing the number of reciprocal links with other sites.
